Problem Based Learning
Background
In the process of learning in the classroom until now still found a learner who positions learners as learning objects, not as individuals who have to develop their potential. This can turn off potential learners. And in those circumstances learners just listen to the teacher's speech in front of the class, so easy learners feel bored with the material provided. As a result, learners do not understand what the teacher just said.In the problem-based learning model is different from other learning models, in this learning model, the role of teachers is to offer various problems, provide questions, and facilitate investigations and dialogue. The teacher gives the learner the opportunity to determine the topic of the issue to be discussed, even though the teacher has actually set the topic of the issue what should be discussed. The main thing is that teachers provide scaffolds or supporting frameworks that can improve the ability of the investigation and intelligence of learners in thinking. The learning process is directed so that learners are able to solve problems systematically and logically. This learning model can occur if the teacher can create an open and honest classroom environment, because the class itself is a place to exchange ideas of learners in response to various problems.
When viewed from the perspective of learning psychology, this learning model is based on cognitive psychology rooted in the assumption that learning is a process of behavior change thanks to experience. Through this learning model learners can develop in full, meaning not only cognitive development, but learners will also develop in the field of affective and psychomotor automatically through problems encountered.
The problem-based learning model takes cognitive psychology as its theoretical support. The focus of learning on this model emphasizes what the learner thinks as they engage in the learning process, not on what they do in the learning process.
Like the cooperative learning model, this problem-based learning model finds its intellectual roots in John Dewey's work. In Democracy and Education (1916), Dewey describes the view of education with schools as a reflection of the larger society and the class will be a laboratory for investigation and eradication of real-life problems. Pedagogical Dewey encourages teachers to engage learners in problem-oriented projects and help them investigate important social and intellectual issues.
